Alright, I want to hear just how random you guys are out there. What is the most random, weird, crazy thing you have in your music collection?

Up until this moment, mine was a Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee with the track ‘La Gasolina’ which I picked up while passing through Arequipa, Peru. This, for me, is hella random:


Daddy Yankee held this spot well. That was until I received my latest bunch of review albums in the post. The ‘most random thing in my music collection’ title now goes to Kaka. To try and justify where I’m coming from, I can only describe it as: Swedish electro-punk-pop with a phantom theatrical aspect and an overly hyperactive singer, Richard Karlsson, and that’s all without mentioning the lyrics (“it’s as sweet as salt, it’s a bam/it’s a running halt, it’s a bloody jam” - um, what?).

Up until now, to me, a Kaka has always been an endangered bird native to my home country, New Zealand. The noise they make has been described as a "hoarse, quacking, inharmonious noise, sometimes resembling the barking of a dog". Thankfully, Kaka cannot be described in the same way.

As with anything that is slightly nuts, there is a hint of genius which pokes it’s jester-like head through at random. And by genius I’m referring to the childish intro into lead track ‘Forward’, and the orchestral backing to ‘It’s a Longshot’, and also the quaint track that is ‘Can You Recall It’.

‘The Hotspurs (The less we know the faster we go)’ has a distinct pop vibe to it sounding airily like Holly Valance’s ‘Kiss Kiss’. And yes, that is a bad thing. In fact, it’s an effing terrible thing.

It’s hard to place my finger on exactly how I feel about this album. I am not whipped into a flurry of excitement nor am I spurred to go and find out more about Kaka, or even enquire as to a back catalogue. But in all honesty, it’s not bad. It sits nicely in my section of weird stuff I only bring out on very special occasions to make me seem more random than I really am.
