Since their formation in 2007 through auditions, The Saturdays have quickly become one of Britain’s biggest pop acts bringing to the spot light their brand of Electro-Pop. Over this short time they have brought us their debut and self titled album, as well as a hand full of hits and chart toppers. The all girl 5 piece seem to have a wide and different musical history prior to the band, ranging from singing in a rock band, performing in West End Theatre and being past members of the S Club Juniors in the 90’s. So in a way, its nice to know that they have a some musical knowledge and musical background, unlike most of the annoying and generic acts that simply get lucky enough to win The X Factor.
Their single, titled ‘Work’ is the stuff that great pop songs are made of. Opening with a trance like synth, shortly followed with a bursting symphony of violins, the track jumps right into the action. Although this song is following many of the typical girl-band ‘laws’ (e.g. one girl at a time to sing the verse then all joining in on the chorus) it’s a fun and enjoyable song, there’s no denying that. The chorus, as with most records dominating the charts lately, is anthemic and insanely catchy, reminiscent of almost any Girls Aloud song (as they have been compared to by critics on a number of occasions). All these musical ingredients and more make for a brilliant pop record.
These days a bunch of girls sporting nothing but Top Shop clothing, singing over each other and dancing in formation is not unheard of, not by a long shot, but 'Work' is so catchy, its hard not to find yourself ‘humming’ it to yourself when you least expect it.
Although it may not be for everyone, especially if you have had it up to your eye lids with pop bands jumping up on the regular bandwagon- probably the majority of the folks on Altsounds.com! There’s no denying that this is the kind of music that sells units.
The Saturdays may not be all that different from any other run of the mill all girl act, regardless; I think we will see and hear a lot more of them for a good while to come, especially if they keep get songs like these written for them
