Recorded at the famous Scottish venue King Tut's Wah Wah Hut during the celebratory single launch of 'Crisis In The Slow Lane' (which is actually the plodder of the bunch) we are offered up the eight songs being touted on the Xcerts current tour in all their earnest, heartfelt glory.
You can find a live review of said set (London version) on this very site and it doesn't sound like much has been altered for the 'home town' gig. I would however like to chuck in Dashboard Confessional to the who-do-they-sound-a-bit-like game - especially on 'Aberdeen 1987'.
There are some lovely background vocals from the enthusiastic audience (has a Scottish crowd ever been anything less? Ever? In the history of time?) and a nice bit of chat from the band but nothing out of the ordinary. It all begs the question: But guys, didn't you just release a proper album titled 'In The Cold Wind We Smile'? What's up with this live record?
“It’s every kids dream to play King Tut’s and to sell it out was a big milestone for us. When our sound-man Nelly suggested recording it we were nervous but it came out so well that we wanted our fans to hear it too. It’s a bit rough and ready but it represents the breaking point of 2 years hard touring and we couldn’t be more proud,” said the lead singer, Murray Macleod. Fair enough.
So that's why they did it but unless you were there and wish to relive the moment over and over or are one of those completist freaks then just go and buy the far more polished regular album.
There's nothing wrong with Live At King Tut's, there's just nothing all that right with it either.
