Barry White is back and this time, he's thin and white. Now that I've got your attention by using the worst introduction ever, let's talk about Mayer Hawthorne. A 29 year old singer born close to soul city Detroit, the capital of soul ballads that inevitably had an undeniable influence on the young Hawthorne, as his first single 'Just Ain't Gonna Work Out' clearly shows.
The song starts off with the classic Barry White treatment; a low, sensually voiced spoken introduction build upon a slow but steady rhythm track. This quickly heads into a delicious smooth bass and drum rhythm that, accompanied with electric piano and guitar continues for the rest of the 2.5 minutes of the song, as well as for the rest of the evening.
It's amazing how close Hawthorne comes to the typical sound of the soul ballads of the seventies; even without having a real melody or deep, Einstein inspired lyrics the song keeps on bouncing around and around in your head because it just feels right.
Judging by the other songs on his music page Hawthorne's first album 'A Strange Arrangement' is going to be a fresh breath of air for the worlds finest soul radio stations. No more forgotten oldies and new, soulless former boy band members on air.
