Kate Miller-Heidke - Curiouser [Album]

‘Curiouser’ is the follow up album from Kate Miller-Heidke after the success of her debut album titled ‘Little Eve’, released in 2007. This time Kate and her band have created a brilliant blend of rock, pop and folk that seems to push the brink of musical insanity to a new level.

Kate Miller-Heidke seems to have hit the nail on the head with the ingeniously titled record of ‘Curiouser’, chosen due to the fact that this is the exact attitude the album seems to deliver from the get go. Together with her band (consisting of 3 other members), Kate Miller-Heidke headed over to LA to record with producer Mickey Petralia, responsible for such artists as Beck, Peach and the Dandy Warhols.

Like any artist with a streak of creative genius running through their veins, Kate has brought to us a collection of songs full of energy and enthusiasm, with each song being more intriguing than the last. Almost every song on ‘Curiouser’ has a quality that tends to make it stand out from the rest. The haunting and slightly eerie vocals on the albums opener ‘The one thing I know’ could send a chill down your spine before breaking in to a pop like chorus with a completely different ‘bouncy’ tone. It's the same with the track ‘Can’t Shake It’ which is one of my personal favourites of the bunch, opening with a simple kick drum and vocals reminiscent of any of Gwen Stefani’s releases before breaking into a radio friendly anthem poking fun at the inability to dance. These are just some examples of what’s in store for you. There is so much more going on here and there are just so many more layers to 'Curiouser'.

Although it may not be a completely original piece of work, 'Curioser' does seem to be an album written in some unique ways, and takes a refreshing look at musical creativity and experimentation. Due to the diversity of the songs on 'Curioser' I’m sure that any listener will find something that with hit the spot with them, even if its just from a musical appreciation point of view rather than enjoyment.
