Altsounds - Wave Machines - Punk Spirit [Single]

What exactly is the essence of Punk Spirit? Is it sticking a safety pin through your nostril instead of slowly eroding it with the white line? Is it the oh so fashionable Mohawk in a variety of rainbow colours that can be used to gather up phlegm at a particularly boisterous punk get together? You see it's a tricky one to answer and I can assure you that 'Punk Spirit' by Wave Machines has no answers and nor was that the intention, so what do we get instead?

Well it seems to me to be some sort of attempt at mellow rebellion, the music is all floaty and full of lo-fi foibles that really are all a part of the charm. The vocals give us falsetto "ooohs" and "aaahs" that drift throughout and are kind of comforting. I think that the title is some sort of clever juxtaposition of instilling the term 'Punk' and all the characteristics that come with it into the 'Spirit' of lo-fi music which relies heavily on being melodic, yet disinterested in being too clever or articulate.

Wave Machines make a very charming mish-mash much like The Beta Band did before them very effectively, it's promising.
