A packed gig list, a growing band of followers and some very nice publicity that describes Killaflaw as “the missing link between Soundgarden and the Prodigy.” This coupled with industry awards like XFM’s “Demo of the Year Award - 08” means that KillaFlaw is definitely going only one way, and that is upwards.
Hailing from Liverpool which has a long tradition of conjuring up good musical artists, Killaflaw has released a single here that is sure to get a bunch of air play. 'Holy Funk' opens with a very, very nice introduction section that blossoms into a seriously good beat. Sounding very similar to early Aphex Twin / R & S Records stuff.
We are then introduced to the lead vocal, and here, for some reason it sounds distinctly like the vocal front man of the Scissor Sisters. Hmmm. In fact I couldn’t help but feel that Killaflaw was almost a more adult, darker impersonation of the Scissor Sisters. Perhaps that is very harsh on Killaflaw because I am sure that is not the sound they were looking for? This may however explain their growing appeal and popularity particularly in Great Britain. There are three versions of 'Holy Funk' on the single. All of the version are quite similar in tone with the best probably being the 'Alert Kick Remix'.
'Holy Funk' also adds the song 'Happy Days' to the single, the 'OneNineEightFour Remix' to be exact and I actually am kind of fond of 'Happy Days'. 'Happy Days' features a very able synthesizer introduction again with a deceptively simple 4/4 beat that opens up into a Prodigy esque break beat section. It is a cool track. Not the title track, but good all the same.
'Holy Funk' shows that Killaflaw have a lot of potential and this single makes me want to check out their full length.
