4AD (Out 14th September)
Over the past year The Big Pink have become one of the bands that seem to be getting the sort of coverage from NME as if they have just discovered a brand new puppy and want to give it as much love and attention as they possibly can. The band have also played to sold out crowds at The Camden Crawl, Pukkelpop Festival in Belgium amongst others and given the members involved it's not hard to see why: the group on record only contains Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell as the core members but the guest appearances become very clear with Daniel Sullivan from SunnO))) playing bass, piano and violin, Patrick Wolf's sister doing backing vocals along with Florence Welch (with no Machine). There's also a great drummer in Akiko Matsurra whose blog you should check out too Exceedingly Good Keex
The album itself brings back memories of the My Bloody Valentine's album 'Loveless' if you were to add more synths. This is due to the industrial style of sound that Robbie and Milo have created on the record. "A Brief History of Love" itself was produced by Robbie and Milo alongside Rich Costey who's known for Muse's Absolution amongst his other work.
The songs sound like if you were to cross My Bloody Valentine with a bit of Alec Empire (Robbie being Alec's touring guitarist years ago on the Intelligence and Sacrifice tour) and given the concept is all about love they carry the rollercoaster ride of being in love well particularly on 'Love In Vain', 'Frisk', 'Too Young To Love' to name but a few and to carry the My Bloody Valentine comparison further. The song that made them a hit 'Velvet' was done by Alan Moulder who helped produce Loveless!
"A Brief History Of Love" is an album that will grip you and force you to listen to it a few times so that you can uncover new layers. To me an album that gets better with each listen is the best type of album and I thoroughly enjoyed this album and is a potential candidate for album of the year? Possibly but with albums by Porcupine Tree coming up we'll have to wait and see, a must listen for fans of shoe-gaze and post-rock.
