Today’s music industry is full of great songs there is no denying that for a second and covering these great songs has become an ever increasingly popular move for most artists, the most famous use of this idea here in the UK would probably be the ‘Radio One’s Live Lounge’ series. More often than not covers are usually the songs that are already played to death and have become more of an audio pollution than a blessing. Christopher Bell seems to have taken a new and refreshing approach to this with his newest release ‘Covers EP’.
Christopher Bell has stepped away from the mainstream traditions of covering chart topping songs from world famous everyday artists. Instead he has decided to take a turn away from the norm and looked outside the mainstream spectrum to do cover versions of songs that today’s music enthusiasts (including myself) may have otherwise overlooked.
Songwriters and artists such as Be Brave Bold Robot and Billy Mack Collector may not be household names or even names you may have heard of but their songs seem to have made enough of a mark on Christopher Bell to make it on to his 'Covers' EP. Personally I think this to be an excellent idea. It opens doors for today’s music lovers to both experience Christopher Bells work as well as the music of great artists both past and present. Over the years there have been so many of the manufactured bands like the Westlife's and Girls Aloud’s of the music world covering other peoples songs and making a ton of cash off of them. It is nice to see in this instance that Christopher Bell has opted against making his cover versions into some kind of annoying pop monster, instead making them his own in the Folk / Acoustic style similar to the works of Bob Dylan and other such artists.
Even if you are not familiar with any of the songs on this album in their original forms it is still going to be something you are going to want to check out if you’re an appreciator of the Acoustic music art form.
