Flood of Red are the a six piece ‘screamo’ band right out of Glasgow and their ‘Place Before The End’ single is, to put it simple rock brilliance. Containing the single itself as well as the addition of the track ‘This Is All We Have Left’, this single is sure to be something of a hit with Emo and Rock fans alike.
The track seems to be a brilliant mix of the heavy with the not so heavy. In typical Emo/Screamo fashion it is driven by slightly ‘mistuned sounding’ guitar chords covered with ‘squeaky’ high-pitched riffs. The vocals however step away from the typical shouting and chanting you usually get to provide well-sung, and somewhat ‘pop-like’ vocals and harmonies.
With most of the acts out there these days new ideas are few and far between and finding something that breaks the mould may not happen as often as we would all like. This however, doesn’t mean that we should discard it, and I should give credit where credit is due. Flood of Red may not be the band we have been waiting for that will break the mould but they are definitely worth the time.
Considering this is their first ever single it is great work from the Northern rockers. I love that it seems to find a subtle ground between heavy and soft giving it much more appeal to a greater audience than the traditional, and somewhat typical ‘emo/screamo’ songs we have been accustomed to. There is also a distinct lack of kids with skinny jeans and over-dramatic personalities in this band it would seem which is also a nice break from the mold.
It may seem I am giving somewhat a mixed opinion of this and that is because I guess I am. 'A Place Before The End' is a great piece of musical craftsmanship, there is no doubting that but it may be overlooked as being nothing more than one of the songs that you can't tell apart from any other making this quite an unfortunate situation for Flood of Red. If they put the hard work in to remove themselves from the Screamo stereotypes then the future looks bright for Flood of Red.
