Mapei is defiantly making a name for herself in the music world. At only 24 years old this female rapper seems to be causing waves with her R&B / Hip-Hop / Rap / Techno mix. Her debut EP ‘Cocoa Butter Diaries’ was released this summer and is an impressive four track body of work.

I know what your thinking. This must just sound like another Missy Elliot or L’il Kim album right? Quite frankly there are times where it does sound like some of those artists but that doesn’t change the fact that Mapei shows great musical talent. Female rappers tend to step away from the inspirational shadow that said artists have cast over the genre just to get noticed these days. Mapei is no exception.

Mapei seems to have a wide and diverse musical arsenal. The rapper shows in just 4 tracks her in depth musical understanding and production skills. I wouldn’t say that 'Cocoa Butter Diaries' is a totally unique and new sounding piece of work but it is nice to here that some rappers these days are willing to take it back to basics as well. Mapei’s use of classic dub-step sounding drums on the occasional track would suggest this fact.

The 'Cocoa Butter Diaries' EP is a must for any fan of the aforementioned genres. If your not into this style of music then I would advise you to stay clear of this one. It doesn’t really contain songs that you would expect to hear on any of your mainstream radio stations so fans of slightly more up-tempo music will probably not find this enjoyable. However, with the name this artist seems to be creating for herself within the industry 'Cocoa Butter Diaries' is worth checking out just to hear what all the fuss is about.
