Eight Legs - I Understand / Stay Cool [Single]

Eight Legs - I Understand / Stay Cool [Single]

Boot Legs

The press release for indie wonder Eight Legs’ new single was a bit disturbing: NME calls them “the music equivalent of Cristiano Ronaldo”, who to me is an overrated, self important prick. Luckily, eight legs that make up this band are actually as good as they say on the cover and hopefully the only thing in common with that overpaid waste of space will be the amount of fame that will come with their upcoming full length “The Electric Kool-Aid Cuckoo Nest”, set for release in early 2010.

Although you may not realise it you may know Eight Legs from previous track 'These Grey Days', soundtrack to the TV campaign anti-binge drinking, “Boys Night Out” ad; if you’re a fashion victim, you may also have heard them in the background at Dior Homme’s Paris Fashion Show 2008. Knowing our readers, it’s more likely that you’ve heard them on Radio 1 or XFM’s playlist, climbing their way to a Number 5 spot in the UK indie charts.

So, what should you prepare yourself for when sticking 'I Understand' in your CD player? Just look at the cover: their sound is about as colourful as the picture of them in animal outfits. Not only that but the single 'I understand' is so infectious that by the end of the first chorus you’ll be singing it and wondering where you’ve heard it before. Even the Kinks esque B-side 'Stay cool' has the potential of being a chart buster. Sinuous vocals, fast catchy guitar riffs. Everything just blends perfectly in to a rock´n´roll piece that is a potential best seller yet not boringly commercial. Think Blur meets Velvet Underground, a hint of the poppiest Smiths and the best Razorlight, shake it all and add Redbull! Now you may have a vague idea of what I’m talking about. Still, this is so good you’ll just have to listen for yourself to believe. If the whole full length is at these levels, I can see Eight Legs being one of the most pleasant and acclaimed surprises of 2010.

I don’t normally get this excited for a single, but I’m so digging this that it’s now time to leave you all and book my spot for their live gig at 100 Club in London on September 23rd. I love the atmosphere in small clubs, and I doubt I’ll have another chance to see these four in anything less than a thousand capacity venue.
