Altsounds - Shèna - My Fantasy [single]

Pouring out of the sub comes fast paced, glossy, brassy, soul-sounding, glorious DISCO! Nu-Disco to be precise, the kind whose home is in East London rather than Milan or Detroit, and which started breathing again from maybe 2002 onwards/

It's world-wide and a wide-ranging genre, so if you want to know what to expect, think a brassier, faster version of Chaka Khan, maybe coincidental given that one of Shèna's first big breaks was alongside the legendary Chaka in the cast of the London musical ‘Mama I Want To Sing.’

Shèna is born and bred in England, and she attended the Royal Academy of Music no less which is an impressive accolade and has been pumping her music out for years. First in musicals, then for the last ten years or so as the feature vocal with a number of well known dance DJs - people like Michael Gray and Junior Jack. The credentials then are impeccable

This single - My Fantasy - is from Shèna's first album "Can't Stop The Rain" which she's released being maybe just a little bit tired of being the faceless voice of dance. Time to do something for herself, to front her own show, stand or fall on the merits of Shèna.

'My Fantasy' pumps along from the off. Stax horns, vocals all 'Woo-Hoo' and 'Yeah-Yeah'. The pity is that after the bridge and a chord change or two, 'My Fantasy' runs out of direction and it's a bit of a drawn out repeat-to-fade (except it's a sudden stop). Which changes its mark down from great to merely good.

Do you know what? If you're a card-carrying indie kid I suggest that you forget your prejudice and get your funk on for a minute or two. Think more of the credibility of Donna Summer than the cheese of Barry White and you won't go far wrong. It's nothing new but it's a blast of fun.
