Speech Debelle- Spinnin' [Single]

Last week the world found out the news that Speech Debelle had beat off artists such as La Roux, Florence And The Machine amongst others to win a Mercury music award. The thing is when it comes to the Mercury's themselves they seem to think people like to see a shock result, that people will gasp in amazement and will be curious to check out the winner because the panel (which contains people such as Radio one's playlist controller... less said about THAT the better) feel they'll be edgy. The Problem is with the Mercury Music Awards is that the edgy winners [at least from I can remember] don't work, 1996- M People, 2001- Miss Dynamite. There is one exception to this though in Dizzee Rascal winning a Mercury for his first album.

With Speech Debelle I have to give credit to her idea of using jazz style beats mixed with hip-hop of a more early 80's style similar to Guru, A Tribe Called Quest and such (so in a way kind of 'safe' and a world away from when Dizzee was picked as a winner). 'Spinnin'' does have a nice beat to it and the lyrics reflect the fact that Speech Debelle seems to have had a rough few years but it just sounds too radio friendly. The remixes on the single aren't the best either. The dance one by DVA just doesn't fit, however the Camelot one I do like because it gives 'Spinnin'' a bit of an edge.

So to be fair when I read that the ALBUM hasn't had a sales increase since the Mercury Music win I can't say I'm surprised (while Kasabian etc have). A good song, but not great... style over substance.

Not heard her yet and probably won't go out my way. Don't think M People were ever considered edgy. They were fucking shit though.

Yeah M People were far from edgy - but they were extremely close to shit.

Speech Debelle - Spinnin' [single]

Speech Debelle did pretty well at the recent Mercury Awards and her first single, 'Spinnin’,' taken from the award-winning album, "Speech Therapy," is guaranteed to keep the young South Londoner both in the charts and the public eye.

I like 'Spinnin’.' I like it because Speech’s enthusiasm comes across almost before you realise you’re listening to rap, hip hop [or is it R&B?] with the smallest dollop of jazz. It strikes me that Speech Debelle wouldn’t care what subgenre she ended up in as long as people buy into her music.

Many will buy into her music because although her biographical lyrics speak of the darker side of life in the capital, they’re optimistically presented as an hypnotic, almost child-like accompaniment to melodic brass and strings, piano and double bass with a sing-along chorus that’s sure to appeal to young and old alike, 'Spinnin’' is that accessible.

There are four tracks to the single, the original Radio Mix, plus others from Donae'o, DVA and Jammer featuring Camelot, which has percussive, drummy beats and a fun sound.

Throughout 'Spinnin’,' Speech breathlessly works the beat a fraction faster than your heart rate; follow the bass line and you have yourself a bona fide cardiac workout. You don’t feel it? You haven’t been listening!

Just in case you were wondering what happened here Mitch it turns out this had already been reviewed and in cases like this the new review becomes a sub review of the original.

Took me until near the end of Mitch's post to realise it wasn't just a post but in fact his/her own review. I thought it was an unusually constructed post.
