RazorBladeKisses - Ballerina [EP]

RazorBladeKisses - Ballerina [EP]

Self Released

'Ballerina' is the new two-song EP from RazorBladeKisses, a full-on Gothic band from Southampton, UK. These guys are shooting for eerie. They like minor keys and dark lyrics and though the songs are perhaps a little heavy-handed, they are well crafted and well produced, and I think they reach the sound that RazorBladeKisses were trying to achieve.

'Ballerina' is a dark song in which the female vocalist sings about the witching hour in the middle of the night and it wanting to make you scream. The buzzing guitars, strings, and tinkling keyboards manage to give it a Halloween feel. 'Ballerina' struck me as odd at first, but ultimately they make the song work by staying true to their concept and fully realizing the song. I like it.

'The Butterfly' is another song in a minor key with a similar chord progression, but this one is more of a ballad than the raunchy rocker, 'Ballerina.' Mournful strings and clear piano help to give this one a different feel. 'The Butterfly' also struck my ear funny the first time through but it grew on me more and more with repeated listens.

Photos of RazorBladeKisses on their MySpace page show they are most definitely trying to be the complete Gothic package with a look and sound that they have blatantly worked very hard on. I have to give RazorBladeKisses the nod: they wear it and play it well. I think that if RazorBladeKisses produced a full-length album, it would most certainly find an audience.
