Hailing from South Bay, Los Angeles California punk rockers; The Darlings have been making quite a name for themselves. With their self-titled, self produced album. The Darlings have been grabbing everyone’s attention. They have toured besides greats like Bad Religion, Social Distortion and Pennywise.
The Darlings were formed in 2005. They were the winners of the Battle of the Bands contest presented by AMI productions, which is a very prestigious completion in the South Bay area. Their album, “The Darlings,” is filled with many up and coming hit maker songs. Track two, “Its gone,” is a exceptionally radio friendly song that could be played across the country with people bopping their heads along to the pounding rhythms.
The sound of The Darlings can be described as a mixture between Social Distortion and Face to Face. The opening track “Captivated”starts the album off with the band's unique sound. All the songs on the album have an enormous amount of energy hidden behind the not-so powerful lyrics and intense instruments. The third track “Lacerate” stands out due to its catchy sound and liveliness.
This album is teeming with potential to be something great. Guitarist Josh Kearny describes The Darlings sound as “Rock n’ roll meets punk, they go out and party all night pass out in a gutter, then wake up to go home to a bitchy wife and a dead end job.” The other members of the band are: Buddy Darling (vocals and guitar), Chris Kranes (bass and backups), and Josh Fasen (drums). The Darlings are a good mix of old and new school punk, enough so to keep the old fans coming back, and the new fans coming in.
The Darlings do show potential, however there is no diversityand most of the songs sound the same. With a little work, this band could well be a prestigious act. The Darlings are good, but not good enough to blow your socks off. Possibly enough to untie your shoes?
