Self Released
Wine country, where a man can appreciate his wealth with the purchase and consumption of startlingly expensive grape juice. Not much going on bar a little drunk driving in the old Mercedes, until now that is. Data are putting together some psych-synth rock into the stuffed shirts and it's going to go down like anti freeze in a Lafite Rothschild, but elsewhere it might well light fires.
Opening salvo 'Martian My Love' is a lyricless car chase of a tune with crashing drums backing up dueling synth lines to the accompaniment of a nicely distorted guitar. The twisted synthesizers carry on into the wonderfully titled 'Think More Dummer', where we get our first chance to hear the Thom Yorke vocal stylings. Things get even more brain twisting when the falsetto female backing kicks in and you find yourself wondering if PJ Harvey is guesting.
'Living Under Pressure' drifts into a more Flaming Lips angle with the back line, but the vocals feel more like The Cooper Temple Clause back at the start of their career. When Data asks us not to stress them out you very much want to obey. It's a deep dark little slice of a musical spasm and is quite brilliant.
Next we're hit with a murky wave of undulating synth feedback in segue tune 'Pink Dreams' before being launched into the second half of the EP. Things are no less complicated this side of the trip as 'New Protection' wins us over with a sprawling chorus that doesn't actually seem to start or end anywhere.
'Violet Square' gets even deeper into the more experimental Radiohead sound but still maintains its own voice while closer 'A Night With B' clocks in at an impressive eight minutes and forty two seconds. It's a cracking flip out. If I go crazy then I definitely want this as my soundtrack.
Much more about the band I can not tell you but what else do you really need to know? Go listen.
