A Wolf Like Me - We’ve Seen His Lair [EP]

'Wolf' seems to be back in fashion for band names. We have the stoner rock of Australian’s Wolfmother; arty experimentalism from America’s Wolf Parade and power-pop-punk of Wolf Am I from the UK. So what can we expect from A Wolf Like Me from Leatherhead? This becomes especially more relevant as they are named after a TV On The Radio song?

Sadly whatever expectations you may have, A Wolf Like Me do not deliver on them. Unless you are expecting fairly formulaic and dull alternative rock. Lead off song 'I Would Be Dead' charges off with tight riffing over a racing rhythm section with shrieking punky vocals but we’ve all heard this so many times before. It has a youthful energy to the execution but is neither inventive nor memorable. The second song 'Bad Things Come To Those Who Wait,' is for a moment the same guitar riff as first song? That’s another problem with this four song EP - there is very little variety on offer either.

One of the great things about reviewing for Altsounds.com is coming across new bands including unsigned and emerging artists. Sadly, A Wolf Like Me isn’t one that I will be remembering. At this stage (their first release) it just feels like youth-club battle of the bands material. I hate to put a band down but A Wolf Like Me need to spend a bit more time sharpening their teeth and working on their song-writing and maybe then they can give us something that will really make the fur fly.
