Yesterday as a bit of a treat I followed up my lunch with a dessert that consisted of battered banana, cooked in sugar, deep fried in sugary pancake batter and then heartily rolled in even more sugar. The whole thing was served doused in syrup. Because I eat there a lot and they like me, the nice lady went overboard with everything. I forced down this intolerably sugary confection despite my heart and my guts shouting 'No Catshoe, noooooo....' It may seem an obvious result but I felt just a tad bilious all afternoon. Burp.
I also recently listened to Lenka's self-titled debut album, and that's just how it was, a massive sugar overdose so please send for the paramedics. This being said I find it surprising that this single 'The Show,' the opening track of said album wasn't a replication of the same experience. Perhaps the parallel is that I can drink one or two Southern Comforts but any more than that and they just make me - well - let's just say we have history.
This still sounds like a 12 year girl doing Regina Spektor covers, but it also sounds bouncy and fun and I can see why it got used in an episode of Ugly Betty. Pop froth and inconsequential but still OK in that it doesn't pretend to be anything else. This is just so diametrically opposite from her previous life in Decoder Ring. Two halves of my psyche are fighting, one affronted and the other thinking this might almost be a guilty pleasure. Almost but not quite.
The surprising thing for me, trawling the wind-blown expanses of the internet, is how popular she is with adult audiences, even with grown men in Utah. Maybe I'm being a snob, maybe if you can just force it down, you'll get used to it. Kind of like training yourself to eat sticky sugary puddings.
