Well this is an unexpected treat - within a week I have discovered two bands of old school rock n rollers who are good enough to make me pause in my quest for "the new sound." First Soft Black, and now Dan Webb and the Spiders, and if Soft Black like to keep things simple, then on their self-titled debut, Dan Webb and the Spiders are even more elementary in their approach to song-writing and the delivery of its product.
Hailing from Boston, this four-piece are a bit of a mystery to say the least. There is very little information about them, which doesn’t even include their names (I have a hunch one of them may be called Dan Webb), but from some shabby live footage and almost-as-shabby photos, you can deduce that they are so poor that they can only afford one set of clothes each, and two of them had to cut short their jeans for the summer. So really, if nothing else, you should go out and buy this album just so they can afford to purchase some new attire. Not that you will be disappointed if you do; certainly not if you like straight-up rock n roll with no frills but plenty of thrills. Track such as ‘Fall of ‘08,’ ‘All I Want’ and ‘Heads Up’ more than make up for what they lack in originality with muscular melodies that demand revisiting. Sure, a couple of the tracks only just lift themselves above your average ‘bar / pub band’ level (‘The Long Way Home’ and ‘So Sure’), but for the most part they recall a more direct Dinosaur Jr, or on ‘The Worst,’ Insecticide-era Nirvana. At only nine tracks long, the lengthiest of those clocking in at less than three and a half minutes, and three of them being under two minutes, it almost seems generous to class this an album, but I guess in music at least, quality is always preferable to quantity. So I will offer you neither and stop there. Tracklist: 01 The Fall of ‘08 02 All I Want 03 In the Light 04 Heads Up 05 The Worst 06 The Long Way Home 07 So Sure 08 Carried Away 09 Couldn’t Wait
