Let’s start by saying that “Herald Moth” is absolutely not what you would expect after listening to the first single out take ‘Single of the Weak.’ But what is it then? This is the big issue about "Herald Moth."
‘Single of the Weak’ is some kind of electro pop, catchy track clearly created for the mainstream, which isn’t actually that bad but I guess not very Inme, and surely not very rock ’n’ roll. If you thought that this has indicated a change of direction from the Essex outfit, think again, because ‘Single of the Weak’ is the only track of its kind out of the twelve on “Herald Moth.” So, after misleading the audience with a radio pleaser, where did Inme go? Therein lies the problem everywhere. Rock, metal, hardcore, grunge, post-grunge, pop... you name it, "Herald Moth" probably has it.
After a promising start, Inme have thus far failed expectations, and have been kept under radar by critics and fans alike. I can only imagine the tension in creating a new product knowing it’s going to be dissected and thoroughly analysed. Having a strong support in the very beginning is not necessarily good, you know that everything you will do next will have to answer the question “was the hype justified?” It won’t be enough to release something that is just good, it will have to be better, possibly genius to keep everyone happy. And here comes music business’ cruel natural selection process. If you panic, you’re out.
"Herald Moth" is not a bad album at all in my humble opinion. INME could do with a better vocalist than McPherson which is often kind of soulless, but there are good ideas, catchy hooks, quality riffs and plenty of potential hits. Starting with the opening ‘You won’t hear from me again’ and ‘Nova Armada,' where the addition of a second guitarist can be fully appreciated. What lets “Herald Moth” down is that song by song it seems to lose a clear direction, often within the track itself. It sounds to me like INME panicked and tried to appeal to every potential audience, risking disappointing all of them in the end.
I ask you all to listen to “Herald Moth” with an open mind, because there’s some good stuff here and these guys are undoubtedly talented, unlike a lot of X-Factor rejects that populate record stores nowadays. Give ‘Captain Killjoy,’ ‘Belief Revival,’ ‘Happy to Disappoint You’ and the ballad ‘I Will Honour You’ a go, they’re so different you should find something you like in there. Don’t press play thinking “Let’s see what INME came up with this time”, and you may actually enjoy it.
Whatever welcome “Herald moth” gets from press and public, I hope to hear more from INME. Good job, and if you stop worrying that much about reviews and airplay the next one will be even better.
