The Number Twelve Looks Like You, now there is an interesting band. Meshing so many different facets of sound and creating a smorgasbord of genres, The Number Twelve Looks Like You know how to make interesting music. For some reason, from listening to their records, I thought that The Number Twelve Looks Like You were a 6 piece. So I was very surprised to see only 4 members taking to the stage. My initial thought was that they would sound underpowered. How wrong I was. They sounded massive with such power and adrenalin.
A big amount of respect goes out to the guitarist Alex and drummer Jon, who are both technically phenomenal. During one track Jon pulls up an extra cymbal and puts it on the snare he then moves it around whilst playing it to create an interesting sound. Alex plays a custom made 7-string guitar and covers every inch of the neck and plays in so many different styles. It’s these extra little pieces of initiative that make The Number Twelve Looks Like You such an amazing act.
Next up, Misery Signals take to the stage and immediately break in to ‘A Certain Death,’ which sets the room off. No better way to start off the set than with an absolute thumping track. From their latest record ‘Controller,’ Misery Signals come across as a kind of metalcore band, but live you see their hardcore roots really coming out. Every inch of the stage gets covered by constantly moving bodies, whether they are those of the band members or the audience.
The energy never seems to stop throughout the whole show. The Underworld may not be the best venue for sound but it is one of the best for atmosphere and the lack of barriers allows fans to literally climb onstage and jump back off. This teamed with the pits going round, is a recipe for carnage and when a band is as on form as much as Misery Signals there is no stopping it. Misery Signals are obviously well in to the swing of the tour and seem to play seamlessly, with great synchronicity. Overall tonight was two great bands, with two different styles but one outcome, a fucking awesome performance!
