A lot of people (myself included) may wonder just what exactly ‘A-FREE-KA’ is (no its not made up). It is actually an Egyptian word meaning Spirit, described as knowing no limits or boundaries according to Shafiq’s website.
Shafiq has taken this as something similar to well advised words so it would seem, as his musical creativity here seems to show no limits of ideas or experimentation. The result of which is this album. Not really something you can put into one genre, ‘En’ A Free Ka’ seems to touch on a number of genres that includes dance, soul, funk, electro, as well as many more. The musical creativity that Shafiq has expressed here is heavily complimented by the outstanding production, resulting in a musical blend that will impress any music appreciator.
‘En’ A Free Ka’ isn’t one of those albums that will offer anything that the listener will find particularly new. What it does have though is the best of all worlds. Shafiq has taken what we all seem to enjoy from all genres, filtered out the crap and left us with pure electronic brilliance.
Shafiq seems destined to break down the barriers that keep electronic music in its neat and tidy comfort zone, taking it to some unfamiliar territories and shaping it in his own image. It isn’t the most upbeat album in the world I will say that much, but judging by what has been created here, it doesn’t seem like it was ever meant to be. As a result it is not a disappointment in the slightest. A must for anyone who appreciates musical growth and music production.
