Boys Noize - Power [Album]

Boys Noize - Power [Album]

Boys Noize Records

If there is one electronic artist around killing the dirty electro scene with their insanely well produced, compressed to oblivion bass kicks it is Boys Noize. The production on their works is phenomenal, and it makes us music producers very jealous. The obvious point to make out is that insane production isn't always an amazing thing, but it suits this genre so well.

Boys Noize debut "Oi, Oi, Oi" released back in 2007, was a mish mash of hardcore electro dance, with some fast paced dance beats and dirty electronic bass. Opener '& Down' was a killer electro dance-floor dream. It had a fresh sound to it that no one was really releasing at the time. Now, there is an abundance of the same sounding electronic dance artists. Mainly coming from the Ed Banger label, its all sounding very similar.

The only way to describe how you feel when listening to "Power" is uncomfortable. There is an un-easy vibe about the whole record, frankly its not really enjoyable on your own. It's actually quite hard to palette in one sitting too but I can imagine this hitting the club dance-floors and causing the right amount of havoc that it was inevitably meant to. The repetition of some of the samples and sounds get right under your skin at moments which ultimately makes you skip track. Tracks like 'Starter,' 'Transmission,' 'Nerve' and 'Drummer' just repeat and repeat and repeat the same loops. At times it sounds like they have just sampled a car revving its balls out to the limiter.

All bad news in the Boys Noize camp then? Well, there is still hope. Collectively the whole album does actually work in a certain way, it's just a full on meal to listen too. Opener 'Gax' slowly enters the sound spectrum with thoughts of Sebastien Tellier, Mr Oizo and SebastiAn, and gently warms your ears up into 'Kontact Me.' Which sounds like Mario fucking a Gameboy to put it frankly, but in a sensual way. The explosions of noize in 'Gax' are desperately similar to any works of SebastiAn and Soulwax. There are elements of similarity all the way through, which is not really all that exciting, but its familiar territory. Other tracks go off on a tangent of random glitchy samplings, 'Jeffer' just sounds like a Klaxons remix.

To finish things off 'Heart Attack' slows the whole album down with a lo-fi down-beat tempo. It still has the odd uncomfortable sample, yet this is by far the most emotional track on the album. Sounding like something off a Chilled Ibiza compilation, the most convincing for Boys Noize. Their name could be completely confusing then, Boys Noize = Ambient Electro?

If the whole of 'Power' was like this, it would no doubt be one of the strongest Electro albums to finish the year.
