I have got to give
We Are Fiction credit where credit is due to start off with; deciding to leave Rising Records and wanting to release this EP themselves is an interesting twist and I have to applaud that!
Screamo as the ‘kids’ tend to call it is a combination of emotional lyrics (similar to emo) which is more screamed at a loud volume [for those that didn’t know (or did and didn’t care, either way I’m trying to educate as well as entertain here!)]
We Are Fiction fit snugly into this mould quite easily. Kicking this self titled EP off with the lovely titled (and carrying on the trend among bands e.g. Rammstein to mention a word normally associated with women) 'Bitch' which brings to mind the template set by bands such as The Blackout in that the screamed vocals always try to overpower the melodic vocals and follow their formula of a scream followed by singing and trying to combine both well makes it tricky for me to go along with. The song itself is enjoyable besides that and gives the opener a nice kick that fans of this genre actually need.
'Desire Lines' seems to take my advice regarding the previous song by balancing the vocals out and allowing the guitar to riff away following the drum breakdown. This all makes 'Desire Lines' slightly melodic hardcore in places, seguing nicely into 'Talkin’ with Style' which again follows the same aforementioned formula and this continues for the next two tracks.
We Are Fiction decide to change gears right on the last track by being slightly slower and doing a weird thing of using soundbites of Martin Luther King’s speech while screaming and doing the crowd chant of the chorus. I find this all really weird and bizarre. Now the song works and is enjoyable and I like the idea of using the speech but I don’t think Dr King ever expected a guy to be doing this over it!
We Are Fiction have a bright future ahead and as a taster of what could be forthcoming this self titled debut EP shows that We Are Fiction they have all the right moves. The vocals are clear enough, the guitars are crisp and everything else seems to fit, hopefully though given how the Screamo scene actually is they won’t get lost in the endless shuffle.
