Joshua Radin - One Of Those Days [Single]
 

Actor Zach Braff knows when he hears a songwriter with potential. Just ask any of the artists he featured on the phenomenally successful soundtrack “Empire State”. Let's just say, the man has an ear for a catchy folk song. In 2004 singer/songwriter Joshua Radin was lucky enough to have Braff hear one of his songs. It eventually became featured on the TV comedy hit Scrubs. On the heels of numerous other songs that would later be featured on other shows like Grey’s Anatomy. Following a successful debut album; “We Were Here” [released in 2006], Radin released his sophomore set “Simple Times” in 2008 to much critical acclaim. The lead track off the album is the single ‘One Of Those Days.’

‘One Of Those Days’ is a great tune. The title for the song is a cliché phrase turned into a melancholic, yet catchy folk tune about a break-up or falling out with a significant other. His guitar strums are subtle and quick, yet emotionally charged. The light drum taps, simple xylophone progressions, and delicate string sounds scattered throughout the song paint austere, yet very effective verses. Lyrics like “Everyone keeps saying, nothing helps but time, time is all I own” capture the typical post break-up conversational phrases that are exchanged between circles of friends.

The chorus is where the song truly shines. Phrasing like, “So I crawl underneath my blanket, where I can hide away” establish a strong and emotive connection to the listener. Any human being who has ever been romantically involved with someone and subsequently had his or her heart broken can certainly relate to that.

‘One Of Those Days’ is great because it is simple and easy to relate to.

Back in high school I had my heart broken a few times...since then I've become the heartbreaker! Maybe I'm harboring some level of bitterness in my sub-conscience that MAKES me break hearts :)

And correction: The soundtrack referenced in the article is actually Garden State, not Empire State...man I'm a tool
