Most of you who’ve heard of Killa Kela will know him for his worldwide renowned beatbox antics, drawing praise from the likes of Pharell amongst others. This single 'Everyday' taken from his debut album “Amplified,” shows a distinctive lack of the underground sound we all know Kela for.
French house producer Alan Braxe provides the beats (you may remember the huge Stardust dance anthem ‘Music Sounds Better With You’ – love it or hate it, it was a massive summer tune at the time). You then get remixes from Lifelike, Totally Extinct Dinosaurs, Dcup and Lalory (a reliable source tells me that these are Franz Ferdinand in disguise).
I’ve listened to this a few times and have struggled to see how I can write anything good about it to be honest. The original is grating at best and seems to be just a weak effort from Kela to make it in to the mainstream. It sounds like it may be the kind of thing that T4 use on one of their annoying adverts, which is ironic as Killa Kela recently played their T4 on the beach gig this summer.
The Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs remix of ‘Everyday’ is not a bad offering, complete with squelchy basslines and Lyn Collins sample (seems almost standard these days). This might have beefed the rating up somewhat if there was more of the same on offer here. But the fluffy chorus doesn’t stand up well for me. Time will tell whether the gamble pays off I guess. The Lalory remix is OK, but doesn't really grab your attention.
Give 'Everyday' a try before you buy I say.
