The Bromptons - Valentino / Rose Tattoo [Single]

The Bromptons - Valentino / Rose Tattoo [Single]

Sharp Nine Records

Meh.

OK that was my one word review but the truth is that (from this evidence at least) The Bromptons are a very difficult act to work up any kind of enthusiasm over. What we have here is swaggering Rock N' Roll with a capital "N" and while there's nothing wrong with old school rock when it's done well (which this is), there surely needs to be be something special about it that marks it out from the Jets and Wolfmother's of this world... doesn't it?

Well obviously not as The Bromptons guide us through 8 minutes of tedious riff-rock and sappy power balladry laced with cringe-inducing lyrical clichés ("Open up your eyes, till you apologise") and over confident guitar heroics. It's far from awful but it's just musical wallpaper. Both songs here suffer from the same problem, it's classic blues rock without any frills and consequently without any real hooks.

'Valentino' sounds like a bad Pearl Jam song and 'Rose Tattoo' sounds like a bad Stereophonics song. It's competent and harmless but there is no spark here at-all, the music is summed up perfectly by the packaging in which the songs arrived, a plain white CDR in a clear plastic wallet.
