Writers block can be a real bummer. Especially when your name is Colbie Caillat and you’re writing on the heels of a hugely successful album like Caillat’s 2007 debut, “Coco.” As a result the California born singer/songwriter did what anyone else would do. She called up singer/songwriter Jason Reeves, who co-wrote most of Caillat’s “Coco” hits, and American Idol judge and songwriter Kara Dioguardi and the three hopped plane to Hawaii where they spent a solid three weeks writing songs about love and breakups. The resulting album is appropriately titled “Breakthrough.”
One of the best parts about listening to Caillat is her sweet smooth voice and simple yet heartfelt lyrics. ‘Fallin’ For You’ is a catchy little ditty about the classic story of “girl falls for boy” told through the eyes of a young optimistic girl. “I’ve been spending all my time just thinking bout you…I think I’m falling for you.” In fact the album is chock full of bright up-beat love tunes. ‘You Got Me’ takes the listener into the mind of a girl falling in love. ‘Rainbow’ is the song we’ve all sung in our hearts, in one way or another; hoping to find that special person with whom we can spend the rest of our life, like the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.
Besides all of the happy love tunes Caillat doesn’t hide the sometimes darker and heartbroken side of love. In ‘Begin Again’ she paints a picture of a couple on the fritz as she exclaims, “I never wanna fall apart, never wanna break your hear.” “I know we said a lot of things that we probably didn’t mean but it’s not too late to take them back.” The opening track ‘I Won’t’ depicts a couple that breaks up and tries to remain friends, “I don’t want to start over, I don’t want to pretend that you are not my lover that you’re only my friend.” The song ‘Fearless’ is Caillat’s heartfelt ballad to an estranged lover and her finding the courage to move on. “Go on and leave my love out on the street…you better believe I’m fearless.”
“Breakthrough” also includes two tremendous duets. ‘Lucky’ features Caillat and singer/songwriter Jason Mraz singing about how great love can be when you’re in love with your best friend. Conversely ‘Droplets’ is a duet that shows the flip side of love; the break up, written and performed with Jason Reeves “You left a mark and I wear it proudly on my chest.”
For the most part “Breakthrough” is a solid sophomore effort. Every track is well-produced, well-written, and are easy to relate to. Fans of Caillat’s previous work won’t be disappointed.
My Fave Three: 1.)‘Fearless’: The most emotionally driven track on the album
2.)‘Droplets’: A very solid duet. Caillat and Reeves compliment each other perfectly
3.)‘I Won’t’: Catchy and memorable; it really captures the struggle that lovers experience when trying to remain friends after a break up.
