Steven Wilson comes up with these musical concepts that are just impossible to grasp. The range of sound and creative ability ooze from this guy like Van Gough on crack. Choosing to release a Remix album is not unheard of - especially for a guy like Mr Wilson. The only problem with having such a varied style of music production - this results in a Remix album sounding as if it's just another release from the original artist. A lot of the tracks on this album sound just like the originals.
The original 'Harmony Korine' features all of the same structural and vocal elements as the
'Harmony Korine - David A. Sitek Magentzied Nebula Mix.' Apart from the vocals being re-positioned and a different drum sound. Creatively this is a great piece of music, but it just sounds pretty much the same as the original. There are some gritty bass textual elements that do crunch your speakers a little - but in a good way.
It seems that keeping the mix's clean and self preserved are a choice that Steven Wilson is comfortable with.
'Get All You Deserve - Dälek Mix' is again pretty much the same as the original just with a chilled out, layed back drum beat. With the odd break-beat section thrown in there as the original has some crunching distorted guitar lines that send you to unknown scapes.
It would be easy to sit and describe all six tracks on "NSRGNTS RMXS," but for starters that's way too much effort and in all honesty it all just sounds a little too similar. That's not to say that this album is bad, at all. Each remix has been purified into a different element - mainly ambience. The originals have their relaxed attitude but still have a sting to them - "NSRGNTS RMXS," takes six of those stingers and producers them into little Andrex Puppies. This review in itself will feel contradictory, as it all sounds negative, but then the score is high. That's because the original music that inspired these remixes is so great.
The songs have been striped down into just a few instruments and layers - take '
Get All You Deserve - Fear Falls Burning Mix' for example. It just has a simple piano and vocal elements fused together to create a warm ambient glow. In one hand you don't need to grab a copy of "Insurgentes" to get an idea of Steven's sound, just grab either - although the original album is better!
