You never know what this English rocker will do next, which is only one reason she’s so great. The 2000 Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea rode such a ringing romantic high, it was perhaps inevitable she’d crash hard. Here, cloistered and virtually alone, she fuses the rawness of earlier work with Stories’ melodicity, whispering and screaming of betrayal and secret assignations, at once scornful, hurt, and fierce.
