This is a great pop song. Catchy, upbeat and although not lyrically in the Bob Dylan league it certainly isn’t the sort of vapid, soulless pop that makes me want to hack my ears off with a spoon. Soft Toy Emergency have managed to cram more vibrancy and life into 3 minutes than some bands contrive to produce over a whole career. 'Critical' could be New Young Pony Club overdosing on Haribo or a less camp, slightly more feisty take on the Little Boots style of electro-disco. If this doesn’t get you tapping your toes then you are either Sir Douglas Bader or dead (sadly in his case both) and it would take a very hard heart not to see the appeal of this kind of life affirming effervescent pop fizz.

Despite the obvious commercial appeal of 'Critical' Jen's vocals still retain that slightly edgy, new wave quality that makes her much more appealing then some of her rather bland contemporaries. It may be pure electro pop, it may be very commercial but essentially it’s a well written, beautifully polished, hook laden pop feast that grabs you by your pretentious skinny indie tie and twirls you around the dance floor at breakneck speed and, even if you wont admit it to your hipster chums, secretly you love it!

For the long night of the soul there’s the genius of Leonard Cohen, but for a near flawless slice of three minute electro pop perfection there’s Soft Toy Emergency. So get on down and lose that frown!
