Moby - One Time We Lived [Single]

Moby - One Time We Lived [Single]

EMI Records

There is not much to say about Moby that has not been said before. He is as famous as Christmas pudding and consistently produces good music that has meaning and a dash of heartfelt Soul.

"One Time We Lived" is a new single release to coincide with a limited 3-disc re-issue of his most recent album "Wait For Me." "One Time We Lived" is a two track single that opens with the radio edit of 'One Time We Lived, which is a sort of disco number that focuses on the depressing side of relationship heartbreak.

'One Time We Lived' begins in true Italo Disco style, with a bubbling bass line and a tight drum pattern. It then opens up with Moby's now distinct voice achingly describing how he is feeling at the moment. A bit sad. There is a nice piano melody that sits mid-way through the track, that couples nicely with a vocoder call and response vocal. Perhaps 'Moby' is singing about one of his machines breaking down on him.

'One Time We Lived' is not an overwhelming beautiful track, but it is not bad. 'One Time We Lived' probably sits better in the context of the complete album 'Wait For Me' rather than as a single. The second track on 'One Time We Lived' is the much more dancier affair 'Stay Down'. 'Moby' has long publicized his affection for dance music, and in 'Stay Down' we are given an insight into this affection.

'Stay Down' could be described as a Progressive House number that features some excellently produced layered vocal, a massive string section and a layering of digitized choir voices. The mood is as somber as 'One Time We Lived,' as 'Moby continues in the mood that transcribes so well. Unfortunately at seven minutes long 'Stay Down' never reaches the anthemic climax of a good House tune, but saunters along in a way that Robert Miles probably would have approved of, and that is not a compliment.

'One Time We Lived' is not a bad single, but it is certainly not great. Moby probably isn't the kind of artist that sells numerous singles, as I expect his fans are more the album buying type. 'One Time We Live' should not be rushed out and bought, but it should probably be listened too, especially if you are in the mood to reminisce about a failed relationship.
