Well, don’t know how all of you were feeling but I myself have been waiting for Vampire Weekend's new album for ages and having been able to lend an ear and notice the single 'Cousins' now I feel nothing but excitement.

Cousin’s starts with this ‘feel good’ groove that only Ezra’s voice can offer and with the ultra sharp guitar that forces you to get up and start dancing and humming to the words of the song even though you have never heard the entire tune or paid attention to the lyrics. Then as usual you encounter an unpredictable bass and drum line that match themselves in this perfect quick non punk, non indie sound that of course makes Vampire Weekend worth it already.

I do though find many similarities between ‘Cousins’ and ‘A Punk,’ maybe it has to do with the fact that I recently watched both video clips and they were both directed by Garth Jennings and I believe he did not push the boundaries enough, he used the same idea that morphs the sounds in fast flowing images and sped up stop-motion that are meant to echo the sound of the band. Still, even though the similarities are more than enough for some to cross these youngsters off, they did offer their second single ‘Horchata’ for free and it seems like Vampire Weekend have made lightning strike twice because their new album "Contra" is just as good [or maybe even better] than their previous one.


‘Cousins’ is worth the listen and is definitely a party tune. Short enough to get everyone raving, long enough to have it echo in your brain (that kind of song that becomes a music bug in a good way of course) and adequately bizarre to make you want to listen to the whole album.

Can't wait for the release (UK 11th January)!
