The number of artists with any considerable talent has decreased dramatically over the last few years and continues to do so at an alarming rate. To stumble on an artist such as Lou Rhodes is therefore the equivalent of discovering a precious gem in the midst of a landfill. Her latest single ‘There For The Taking,’ from her forthcoming album, "One Good Thing" is just a small glimpse of the beautiful radiance this album promises.
The album itself was recorded over two weeks and as such was minimally edited, a rare occurrence in today’s world of neatly trimmed, autotuned musical packages. The single is a clear indication of this with the track being made up of just vocals, acoustic guitars and a small string section. In the case of this song, less is definitely more.
Two sorrowful acoustic guitars act as the base for the song and although the melodies played are simple and repetitive, the tone is effectively set. Strings are audible in the areas of the song that might need more emphasis or might require thickening out, rounding the songs off without giving the impression of overproduction. The vocals however, are what make this song shine. The texture of Rhode’s voice is similar to that of Norah Jones and Lisa Hannigan, yet it possesses a unique strength and depth that resonates through the music and envelops the listener with its voluptuousness. At times, Rhode’s voice can be as frail and honest as it can be strong and powerful.
Lou Rhodes has said that the song is about trusting in the universe, falling back into its arms and letting it take its course. The theme is reflected in beautiful lines such as ‘If you could only still your mind, you would find it’s all there for the taking.’ With strong vocals and strong lyrics, how could this song not be success waiting to happen?
If 'There For The Taking' is an example of what is to follow on her album, March 14th does not seem near enough. As disappointed as I was when Lamb decided to go on a hiatus, I feel as though I have been compensated for my loss in abundance. If only all the shelves in music stores were overflowing with these kinds of raw talents.
Somehow, I don’t think I can trust the universe to change that…
