Most of you may already know Danielle Spencer as Russell’s Crowe wedded wife. I’m not a fan of the Gladiator star, neither am I a fan of the Hollywood gossip columns populating the media, so when I made it to Madame Jojo’s for the launch party of Danielle Spencer’s upcoming album “Calling All Magicians”, I was blissfully unaware of her VIP status and able to enjoy her classy performance for what it really was.
I was also lacking knowledge of her previous career as an actress, which peaked in her role in “Home and Away”, but for what I’ve been able to see tonight, the Australian singer-songwriter-pianist has quite a few music aces up her sleeve. In fact, Danielle is so talented that her Tinseltown links may end up being just baggage dragging people’s attention away from her music. Let’s hope this is not the case.
Having the privilege to listen to something before it comes out means you have no idea what you just signed for until the show starts; tonight I think everyone here is happy they put their name on the dotted line and challenged the cold to reach the depth of London’ Soho. As the sound of Danielle’s piano fills the air, the room goes silent and we get closer to the intimate, aristocratic stage for a glance at the diminutive Aussie. As she starts singing, her Kate Bush-like voice is really all you need to hear. The visual becomes secondary, while you’d rather let the music take you on a journey through supple white clouds and Hollywood happy endings. The song-writing also seems pretty impressive on a first listen, however I’ll hold my judgment until I can listen to the songs more accurately.
For now, I suggest you all keep an eye on Danielle Spencer. Forget Mrs.Crowe and if you’re looking for an atmospheric, high class album for champagne fueled swish date, get “Calling All Magicians”, it will be available from all usual retailers from February 15th.
