Fink - See It All [Single]

Fink - See It All [Single]

Ninja Tune

OK so its supposed to be all about the ‘See it All’ title track and it’s three remixes which are all nice and that but you know… it’s the B-Side that’s doing it for me here. I have to talk about ‘Q&A’ basically because I can’t stop listening to it. The hummed vocal is just catchier than swine flu in the noughties you know, honest, it is. The subtle bass line and accompanied vocal harmonies still have me grooving to this song on the tenth play. That’s how good it is.

Anyway, a bit of background information for you, probably should have done this in the first paragraph, but hey ho. Fink is now on his third album on the Ninja Tune imprint and this is the second single from the "Sort of Revolution" LP. If you’re a fan of Giles Peterson’s shows on Radio 1 then you may have heard both tracks off this single release on a recent live session at Maida Vale. ‘See it All’ has also been selected as the theme to CSI:NY recently so I’m reliably told by those nice people at Ninja Tune. Could be the references of the “bright lights of New York” in the lyrics which does it for them, and we’re not talking Jay Z here, oh no.

Back to the business of describing why I’ve rated this track so highly (and I cant say I’m normally a massive fan of this type of music either). I think part of the attraction is it just doesn’t sound as bullshit as Coldplay or just as plain annoying as the likes of James Blunt manages to pull off on a regular basis. Singer songwriters just tend to wind me up. The actual music that goes in to both the original and the remix is to put it simply – heavy. I like the way that there seems to be a big dub influence here in the remixes that could almost be forgiven as sounding slightly Massive Attack in bits (which isn’t a bad thing as long as you do it well).

As well as being one of these cool guitar-playing-singing types, Fink also has a dub alter ego known as Sideshow who produces remix number three on this download only release. DLID and Emika provide the other variations of which I would say I’m most keen on the Emika version purely for its dare to be different.

Worth a few quid and probably a few more if you get the chance to see Fink live.
