Example - Won't Go Quietly [Single]

Example - Won't Go Quietly [Single]

Data Records

I was first introduced to Example’s music in 2007 when my then-girlfriend was highly anticipating the launch of his first album "What We Made". Not trusting her opinion on anything when it came to music (she was a massive Dolly Parton fan and had just bought Avril Lavigne’s new album) I put on my sceptical hat and gave it a listen. I was pleasantly surprised to hear a combination of well delivered, laugh out loud lines, interesting themes and above all a couple of banging hip hop beats. Despite the potential shown however, it received disappointingly little mainstream recognition.

With the release of "Watch The Sun Come Up" in September last year making it into the top 20, Example has clearly decided that ’Dysfunctional electro pop’ and songs about relationships are the best way to gain nationwide recognition. Despite the inevitable backlash from fans of Example’s older work for committing that most heinous of crimes and ‘selling out,’ it’s obvious already that this new direction will result in ’Won’t Go Quietly’ being played in all those bars you claim to hate but can’t avoid when the local shuts.

The song itself is annoyingly good. Not to listen to, it’s actually exceedingly irritating after listening to all the remixes and the song itself numerous times. It’s annoyingly good because it’s achieved its goal, to propel Example to the status of ‘15 year-old persons ringtone’. The vocals show Example’s ability to adapt his flow to a vast array of beats, and the lyrics (depicting the tale of a relationship with a crazy but addictive woman) are going to safely nestle into the valuable head space of anyone who hears it. The beat is a relatively catchy combination of trancey keys, synthesizers and an electro pop beat, but trust me, it gets old fast and I’m sure it will have people reaching for the safety of Radio Two in no time.

During the course of my research I stumbled across a number of ‘wannabe Calvin Harris’ remarks, and while I’m not going to agree with those who comment on Youtube about anything, I can see why ‘Won’t Go Quietly’ warrants such comparisons. With a UK tour currently on until mid April and the upcoming release of the album “Won’t Go Quietly” in the same month, just like Calvin, I think soon we’ll be seeing Example everywhere.
