Bonobo - Eyesdown [Single]

Bonobo - Eyesdown [Single]

Ninja Tune

To be honest ‘Eyesdown’ isn’t really my cup of tea. That said, if you are a fan of the electronica / dance genres then this, the latest single from Bonobo could be just what you’re searching for. Taken from the album "Black Sands" (out on 29th March), 'Eyesdown' is chill-out meets trance. Perfect for a hung-over morning, or even for the night before.

Bonobo is the stage name of musician, producer and DJ Simon Green. With over ten years of experience it’s clear that he is a master of his trade, despite not having conquered the mainstream music market. He is best known for drawing inspiration from the rhythms of natural soundscapes, which he has combined with the haunting vocal talents of Andreya Triana. The raw tones of her voice cut through the rhythmic beats, creating a bizarrely surreal outcome.

The music itself takes experimental to another level and definitely exceeds expectations of typical dance and dubstep music. An intriguing entanglement of broken beats and percussion create the backdrop for Triana’s voice. Remixes by Floating Points and Warrior One transform this relaxed track and catapult it into the realms of a club-worthy tune. Floating Points got his break at London’s renowned CDR Sessions a couple of years back. This remix stretches and breaks the vocals, giving the piece a robotic and highly electronica glossing. Meanwhile Warrior One expand upon the dubstep roots, resulting in a repetitive sci-fi reworking.

Although I remain a dedicated fan of the alternative and rock music genre, I will admit that this track has real potential and definitely validates the long spanning career of Bonobo. Unlike many of his competitors, Simons Green has managed to twist his music and deliver a unique spin on the typical dance genre. So if you’re looking for something fresh, then why not give ‘Eyesdown’ a listen?

Bonobo will be touring across the globe from April until late May.
