Thyrd eye are a sibling trio from Chepstow, who make dark grunge rock. The band consists of Matt Modget (Vocals and Guitars), Hannah Modget (Vocals, Bass) and Gaz Modget (Drums) Their EP "Say Something" sits in front of me and I’m looking at the cover art of the three siblings covered in bruises and I’m not really sure what to expect.
‘Say Something' - the title single is actually pretty good. Its got a nice bit of indie bounce to it, some soft haunting vocals from Hannah Modget who appears to channelling her inner Melissa Auf Der Maur. The riff crunches and the drums pound as the song truly comes alive like a feisty beast, being awoken from a slumber, the louder parts helping to shine a spotlight on the quiter parts and helping to work well within the song. So far ive gotta say I’m impressed.
The second track on the EP ‘Year of the Dog’ starts well with a spikey riff that pulses through the speakers and is met by the vocals of Matt Modget, it starts off sounding a bit like Supergrass at their most driven, it’s a fast bouncy track that displays a good knack for penning a tune from these three, this is a song I could imagine going down well in a club setting.
‘If I wait too long’ was a real surprise to me as its basically just really cold feeling. A creeping guitar part comes into view and is accompanied by really hollow fragile sounding vocals, and despite the fact it sounds like it was recorded it in a well, which actually adds to the effect of the song, this is a really dark menacing sounding song.simple and utterly brilliant.
This was a nice surprise from a young band displaying some genuine talent and as far as first releases go this is pretty impressive stuff. I really enjoyed lsitening to it and look forward to seeing how Thyrd Eye follow it up.
