Edei - Upstairs @ The Garage [Live]

Edei, pronounced ‘Edie’: either way, there’s a good chance you’ve never heard of her. Although, as I find out in my preliminary research, Edei has supported Girls Aloud and sang with Jay Z before turning 21, she doesn’t even have a single available on I-Tunes. You can, however, see her official video for ‘In my Bed’ on YouTube, and it’s clearly not been filmed in her bedroom with a webcam. So, what’s all the fuss about when it comes to pretty young Edei? It can’t be just about being pretty, there’s an army of them out there. But she seems to have won support in high places, and we owe it to you readers to find out exactly why.

Doesn’t take long to find the answers we’re looking for; as the diminutive singer opens her mouth, her voice enlightens the small Upstairs stage at the Garage. A line of back singers only helps framing and shading what is indeed an enormous gift. Her fresh pop tunes could work for Duffy as much as Amy Winehouse, and occasionally there’s even a hint of the late icon Michael Jackson, to whom Edei pays tribute with a well suited rendition of ‘Leave me Alone’.

Sweet Edei has quite obviously been studying the part, and it’s not only vocal coaching I’m talking about. Her moves belong to different auditoriums, looking slightly out of place in this little venue where punters are too shy to get close to the stage, preferring to ogle and nod from the back. Our girl, however, may not be prepared to get off stage and grab the crowd’s attention by the balls, but faces the challenge without fear, not bold but definitely confident. There’s plenty of good stuff to work with, I can see it happening for her and it won’t take long.

Tonight’s last song is catchy first single ‘In My Bed’, soon to be released and already available on YouTube and on this very website. Keep your eyes and most of all your ears on Edei, I have the feeling we’ll hear a lot more of the young singer in a very near future.
