Family Force 5 are a moderately successful band in the States but are only just getting around to releasing their music here in the UK. At face value, Family Force 5 doesn't seem like an appealing act. Even though I'm no longer 15 and obsessed with Death Metal, I still believe that if you want proof that the devil has all the good tunes all you need do is listen to a bit of Christian Rock. Family Force 5 take that Christian Rock and up the ante by spicing it with a dash of Crunk. In theory, this should produce more suckage than a Dyson factory.
In practice, though, it's surprisingly entertaining. The rock (for this song at least) has been jettisoned for a more 80s sound and, while cheesy, there is a rhythm at work here that makes it difficult to resist the urge to dance along. The lyrics are refreshingly free of bible-thumping and poe-faced moralising, instead telling a futuristic tale of the survivors of some post-Apocalyptic disaster banding to defeat their enemies... through the medium of dance. No, I don't get it either. But, hey, I'd rather hear "1-2-3-4, I declare a dance war" than "Someone's crying Lord, Kumbaya" any day of the week.
For those of you going to the upcoming Sonisphere festival, you'll be able to catch this lot live. If you do see them, please, let me know if they dance as badly as they do in the video. S eriously, check out the guy in the background at 3mins and 29secs....
