Solutions - Before the Roars [Album]

Solutions - Before the Roars [Album]

Unsigned

The first time I listened to Solutions’ debut album, “Before the Roars”, it reminded me of the Blink-182 era weirdly and, without actually sounding like Blink-182. Solutions manage to preserve that old fashioned, college-punk atmosphere in their songs and reminded me of the good old days when the biggest problem of the day was not having a date to the prom!

Then again, sticking to this point of view would do an injustice to this album, because underneath all those layers of energy and enthusiasm that hit you when you listen to it for the first time there’s actually substance, a core that you can only get to at a second listen. Songs such as “Young Loins” and “Fighting Tigers” are proof that the band wasn't happy with just doing a punk record – they wanted to do a punk record that said something relevant to their generation and to their audience.

Of course, strictly from a musical point of view, “Before the Roars” doesn’t bring anything new and the message I was talking about seems at times wrapped in teenage riot in a way that it almost makes you smile condescendingly, the way you do when you read your old diaries. With lyrics like “Our heroes are in free-fall. They couldn’t find their worth in the free world” it’s hard not to.

But their intentions were good and the songs stick in your head - even those with a more abrasive sound, like “The Rest Will Follow” or “Mary Anne, Come Out Tonight” (which has a slight Offspring sound) – and for that reason, ""Before the Roars" is one album which can be easily forgotten in a corner of the playlist, only to be rediscovered accidentally and then listened to over and over again.

I also think that Solutions would be pretty fun to see live. Some of the songs from their effervescent début album would definitely sound better if accompanied by an equally enthusiastic performance. Music like this needs a face and a stage show to really sink in. So the next time the boys from Cardiff pay a visit to my neighbourhood, count me in.
