Penny Creek by Western Motto is clearly an emotional experience, although its personal depth never compromises its desire to entertain and please.

To leave an impression of your work on the Earth is an achievement. To leave it up to the listener to take away nothing from your music but the experience is the greatest risk of all. Being reluctant to speak about his lyrics, Blake Stokes attitude should remind us all of how art should be presented to the public. As with most art, we can’t always be so fortunate as to know what truly inspired it’s creator in the first place and we are left with the final product to decipher all on our own. Half the beauty in the aftermath of the creative process is to see what you have evoked in the beholder, and for that reason I believe Blake Stokes has chosen well to keep silent about the meanings of his lyrics.

Playing with breakdowns and sounding like a soul piece through and through, "Backporch Dream" concerns desires and reflections and the peaceful place where they inevitably reach us. The chorus is delicate and mellows and pacifies before building to a more insistent experience in the verses. We find within the chorus of "Lonely, Lonely, Lonely" - an ode to Roy Orbison it seems, however, unlike his standards - which tended to be fairly simple ballads, this track boasts love sick lyrics interspersed with rambling piano work and an ever changeful pace. "Soda Shop" feels pensive throughout but builds to a passionate climax with winding instrumentals and un-yielding vocals

"Monster Town" I found to be the most rewarding of all the songs on this demo, reaching out as it does to a true place in all of us. The vocals are hauntingly poignant and the opening of the song is so quietly beautiful that it takes you off guard when the song changes pace repeatedly with the audacious and refreshing sounds of keys rolling. The sound never becomes cluttered or stepped on, it retains direction and proportion and you’re left feeling satisfied and complete.

In order to be true and individual, Western Motto clearly isn’t compromising anything, leaving the music to be personal; a choice meant for you when experiencing it. It is on these grounds that I recommend hearing Penny Creek and discovering it all for yourself. Each individual will find a different story in it, and overall, this seems to be the spirit in which it was created.
