Debut E.P ‘The Transient Years’ from up and coming post hard-core band The Body Rampant is a great introduction to a band that could become key figures in what is a dying scene. These six tracks, bursting with articulate emotion hark back to the glory days of Finch, The Used, Brand New, and even a little classic Fall Out Boy.
As a fairly new band, it’s incredible that they are so tight in their playing, with thrash riffs and pop melodies slipping seamlessly between one another while singer J.M. Lopez screams, wails, and even whispers over the top of everything. New single and album opener 'Sativa' packs all this into a harsh three and a half minutes and dispels any part of you that thought these boys might be amateurs.
Dressing as their haggard monster alter-ego’s The Body Rampant are clearly trying to do something different and even consider themselves to be a bit experimental. Yet they aren’t. You can hear them trying to mix genres with a little Enter Shikari style trance in the background of Indica but it has all been done before, namely by the aforementioned band. It sounds great and they should by all means keep doing exactly what they are, but it’s certainly nothing new.
Casey Bates the man behind MXPX, Gatsby's American Dream, and Chiodos, is responsible for the sound of ‘The Transient Years’ and as usual it’s in the nice glossy coating we have become accustomed to from these bands. Bates has tied up all the loose ends here and let the boys tight and precise skills take centre stage. You can’t help think though that without Bates this would have been an EP ruined by distortion.
‘The Transient Years’ sounds natural and inspired. If you ever liked anything that was deemed as “emo” and then used the phrase “all music should be emotional you prick” then you will love this and want to treasure The Body Rampant. This is their year.
