When De La Soul exploded on to the scene in the late 80’s with a highly definable late 80’s sound. Songs like ‘Me, Myself and I’and ‘The Magic Number’ have become well known around the world from adverts and radio play, but kept the idea of De La Soul alive during their less popular days.

The 90’s rolled around and gangsta-rap overshadowed the group’s happy rap image. Despite this Kelvin Mercer, David Jude Jolicoeur and Vincent Mason didn’t go anywhere, and they kept their ears to the streets, paid attention to modern sounds like Gorillaz and have come back with an updated De La Soul groove.

‘Pushin’ Aside, Pushin’ Along’ is a song from a concept album called First Serve about two friends trying to make it big in a rap career. The album, rumoured to be made into a movie, is due out this April, exhibits the same cheeky adolescent rhymes De La Soul were making in the late 80’s, but with a modern twist.

The samples are still there, as too are the intelligent lyrical content. It is an inspirational narrative that encapsulates the story of the entire album and marks a return to the spotlight for New York rap.

The honky-tonk keys signal a salute to old school blues and keep the song tinkling along as the spitters show off their skills above the music. A humorous feature to finish the song is a cameo from one of the rapper’s moms.

Fun, exciting and a stamp of ‘still got it’ have dragged the poster boys of fun rap De La Soul through the gangsta-fire of the 90’s, and they still stand in 2012.
