Souvenir records presents Frankfurt duo Chris Wood and Carsten ‘Meat’ Schuchmann, aka Chris Wood and Meat. Both have individually come up through Frankfurt’s music scene before they joined forces to create house/jungle sounds that occupy the famous dance scenes. Their latest EP release JP Juniors, out now, features the title track followed by a Tiefschwarz remix and two B-sides, ‘Dub My Step’ and ‘Tazarine’.
The plot of the opening track starts off slow with percussive elements, and little vocal input. By the time it reaches 4 minutes it has already given listeners everything it offers, yet the track continues to proceed for a total of eight and a half minutes. If it was on in a club, I would have undoubtedly fallen asleep by the time the track had ended. Way too repetitive and long for a stand out house track. The same goes for the Tiefschwarz remix. Both, I can imagine would be the perfect background music when full attention and concentration on the track isn’t needed, as I felt myself drifting off into a deep gaze whilst glazing over during 16 minutes worth of endless percussion beats. But I guess that’s what some would refer to as slow tempo house at its best?!

In fact, the B-side ‘Dub My Step’ offered, not much more, but with a little more substance. Its half-step beat accompanies the track’s name, and its bassline hits your ears with full force to demand your attention. ‘Tazarine’ features a catchy melody, and encompasses a soulful, Latin-esque beat.
It could potentially be an appropriate offering if a Latin dance class and house night club were ever to merge and needed a soundtrack.
JP Juniors is out from 2nd April.
