When Sugarland rolled into Charlotte on April 27th with openers Canaan Smith and Dave Stewart, it was a seriously special occasion. As part of the “In Your Hands Tour,” the band came with no set-list. Instead, they asked fans to make signs with what song they wanted to hear as well as participating in texting and online votes.
Frontwoman, Jennifer Nettles asked the crowd to pass their signs to the stage throughout the show to submit their requests. Some fans got very crafty, with blinking lights,”and some were as simple as a piece of cardboard and a sharpie.
The group started the night out with Nettles on stage banging a beat on a drum for a few minutes before the backdrop lifted to reveal the rest of the band and diving straight into their hit, "Stuck Like Glue". That was followed by April Wesley’s request to hear "It Happens". Some fans took this as a chance to get the band to play some cover songs, one sign asked for "Pour Some Sugar(land) On Me" and the group did an impressive Def Leppard cover, and another requested "Ice Ice Baby" in which Nettles rapped every word!
The text vote was won by "Every Girl Like Me" and the online vote went to "Already Gone". Then a daughter asked the band to play "Baby Girl" for her mother. Halfway through the song, Nettles stopped because she saw the “cutest little girl” and pulled a young nine year old out of the crowd who had been sitting on her father’s shoulders singing every word. Nettles and young Anna finished the song together on stage.
Overall, it was easy to see that the fans and the band were having a terrific time, and both enjoyed the crowd participation. They made the thousands of people packed into a huge amphitheater feel like they were all part of the show. The band played for over two hours and between the onstage banter from Nettles and the rest of the group and the crowd participation, not a moment was boring. Makes me think that more bands should ditch the set-list and allow for a more raw performance!
