On Friday (June 1st), Maryland pop punk outfit All Time Low released "The Reckless and The Brave," the first single off the new follow-up to last year’s Dirty Work. This comes just a few days after the news that the band has split with their major record label. The song, not only reflects that event but is a retrospect of their career thus far.
"The Reckless and The Brave" gives off a nostalgic feeling, which, I imagine very well was the intention. While Gaskarth was reflecting on early years of the band –signing to Hopeless while still in high school and opting to go on tour instead of college– it also brings you back to your youth as well. When I first heard the opening call, “long live the reckless and the brave, I don’t think I wanna be saved,” it took me back to the early 2000's listening to pop punk anthems of adolescence and rebellion by the likes of Good Charlotte, Green Day, and Simple Plan.

All Time Low always have a way of taking you from reality and placing you into this wild and free world, and “The Reckless and The Brave” is no different. “The Reckless and The Brave” is definitely the song I want to put in my car and crank the volume up while I drive down the highway with the windows rolled down. Also, it’s the type of summer jam that is sure to be a crowd favorite as they play the main stage at Warped Tour this year.
While, this vibe is classic All Time Low, compared to previous albums this track proves to be much more mature. Before the release of Dirty Work, All Time Low released “I Feel Like Dancin’” and while it was a joke, maturity of lyrics like, “little rats running mazes, having babies. It's a vicious little world that we live in” are on a different level than “everybody gettin' kinda crunk, I think some dude just grabbed my junk.”
Musically you can hear a tremendous development of Gaskarth’s vocals. In comparison to earlier years his control and range has improved tenfold. Also, “The Reckless and The Brave” includes impressive guitars and dominating percussion that hooks you right in. The leaps and bounds that Jack Barakat (Guitar), Zack Merrick (Bass), and Rian Dawson (Drums) have made as musicians is incredible.
As All Time Low approach a decade as a band, it’s great to see them mature lyrically and instrumentally, and hopefully this album of self-discovery includes more powerful punk anthems like “The Reckless and the Brave” because this single sets the bar high for them.
