Tucson Arizona's Godhunter return with their latest effort Wolves which is their finest effort to date. Godhunter is a combination of several of the Southwests big names in the hardcore-noisecore-sludgecore (there's too many sub-genres) scene, but it's definitely with Godhunter that the new sound of heavy punk is clear.
The path of American hardcore through music history has been as tumultuous as they come, and growth in sub-genres has split the scene even further, but Godhunter have a real sense of purpose about them, something that's been missing from many other acts going about today. Wolves is a 5 track kick to the teeth that captures the spirit of hardcore in a crashing wave of aggression. The opening track "(Stop Being)Sheep" builds slowly but expertly to a "Modern Life is War" style drop that sets the tone for the EP - gnarled, thundering with frustrated energy and downright fun.
The riff-ridden opening of "Wolves of the North" shows that Godhunter could work equally well as a Pelican/Torche style instrumental band, but Charlie's potent anger and full throat scream on "Powerbelly" puts you beyond any doubt of their combined power. This precision between band mates helps forge the Converge-like percussion that abounds in Wolves and means a full album will be eagerly awaited by everyone with a good ear for contemporary hardcore music.
The drum-work is as heavy as ever, double-bass pedals only brought in when totally necessary (no Dragonforce here thank you very much), but it's the post-metal style guitar work and it's seamless combination with the vocals that make the album; the raucous crushing power of "Dead Hooker by the Side of the Road" is all the evidence you need for that.
The future looks good for heavy punk across on US shores, with mindless aggression being replaced by a more focused anger at the injustices of modern society, and that's a step in the right direction for any punk band with something to say.
